Rank #1
DeWalt DWMT74739 Tough Box 23-Piece 1/2" Drive Impact Socket Set
Our Verdict
23-piece 1/2" drive impact socket set, SAE and metric, in a DeWalt Tough Box. The one to buy if your impact wrench is 1/2" drive and you want impact-rated steel without paying premium-set money.
Why it's number one: Impact-rated CR-440 with DirectTorque on a 1/2 inch drive in a Tough Box, the only pick with a critic score (Pro Tool Reviews 10/10); Amazon rating 4.8 from 9,017 owners.
This is the practical pick for anyone running a 1/2" impact wrench, which covers most wheel, brake and suspension work. It is properly impact rated in heat-treated CR-440, the DirectTorque profile grips the flats to reduce rounding, and the sockets are o-ring and retaining-pin compatible so they stay on the anvil when you are working overhead. Coverage is 10 SAE from 7/16" to 1" and 10 metric from 13mm to 24mm, with 20mm and 23mm skipped, so check your sizes before you rely on it. One thing the listing will not tell you: the 72-tooth quick-release ratchet in the box is a hand ratchet, not impact duty. Only the sockets, the extension and the adapter belong on the wrench. Australian context, it sells here under the US part number rather than an AU-catalogued SKU. DeWalt Australia does list DWMT socket and ratchet sets, but not this one, so a warranty claim on it is less routine than a DCF or DCD power tool claim. At A$134.84 with 8,979 ratings behind it, this is still the best-evidenced impact set on Amazon AU.

How we scored it
Each measure is marked against the category's rubric, where 10 is the best you can buy, 8 is strong, 6 is basic but sound and 4 falls short. The bars show that mark on the Top7 scale (a 6 reads as 7.0, an 8 as 8.5); the notes quote the rubric mark.
Coverage 8.9 (rubric 8.5): Standard sockets in SAE and metric (7/16 to 1 inch, 13 to 24 mm) scores 7.5; largest 24 mm and a 72-tooth ratchet add half a point each.
Steel 8.5 (rubric 8): Impact-rated heat-treated CR-440 with the DirectTorque anti-rounding profile; laser-etched only, no AU-catalogued warranty.
Case 8.5 (rubric 8): Tough Box latching jobsite case with fitted socket locations.

GearWrench 84916N 3/8" Drive 6-Point Standard & Deep Impact Socket Set (44 Pieces, SAE + Metric)
Our Verdict
44-piece 3/8" drive impact socket set in chrome molybdenum, standard and deep, SAE and metric. The set to buy alongside a 3/8" impact wrench, and the only pick in this category with a clearly serviceable Australian warranty.
Why it isn't number one: It scores higher than our number one, but only 0 published reviews of this exact model.
If you have just bought a 3/8" impact wrench, this is the set that goes with it. The sockets are chrome molybdenum and GearWrench catalogues them in its impact range, which is the distinction that matters: chrome vanadium hand sockets can fracture and throw shrapnel on a rattle gun, and these will not. Coverage is the widest here, standard and deep in both SAE and metric, 5/16" to 3/4" and 8mm to 21mm, so it handles older imports as well as modern metric vehicles. The off-corner loading profile bites the flats rather than the corners, which is what saves a rounded head on a seized fastener. Sizes are laser etched and hard stamped, so the markings survive after the etching wears. It is also the only pick in this seven with a clearly serviceable Australian warranty: 84916N is a catalogued AU SKU, sold through Total Tools and other trade retailers, and backed by Apex Tool Group Australia. At A$199.95 it is the dearest set here, and worth it if the impact wrench is earning money.

Coverage 9.3 (rubric 9): Standard and deep sockets in both SAE and metric, 5/16 to 3/4 inch and 8 to 21 mm; single 3/8 inch drive, no ratchet, largest socket under 22 mm.
Steel 10.0 (rubric 10): Impact-rated chrome molybdenum with off-corner loading; sizes laser etched and hard stamped, and an AU-serviceable lifetime warranty.
Case 7.0 (rubric 6): Plain blow-mould case; the card does not say whether every piece has a fitted location.
Pros
+ Chrome molybdenum steel that GearWrench lists as impact rated, so it is safe on a rattle gun where chrome hand sockets are not
+ Standard and deep in both SAE and metric, 5/16" to 3/4" and 8mm to 21mm - the broadest coverage in this category
+ Off-corner loading profile grips the flats instead of the corners, which is what stops a seized fastener rounding off
+ Catalogued Australian SKU backed by Apex Tool Group Australia, so a lifetime warranty claim is actually serviceable here
Cons
− Dearest set in the category at A$199.95, and the published contents are sockets and drive accessories, so budget for a ratchet if you do not own one
− 3/8" drive and nothing above 21mm, so 4WD hub nuts and larger wheel nuts still need a separate 1/2" deep impact socket
− Plain blow-mould case with no modular storage system to expand into
Impact-rated 3/8" drive set covering SAE 5/16" to 3/4" and metric 8mm to 22mm in shallow and deep. The cheapest sensible sockets to pair with a cordless impact wrench, as long as you accept chrome-vanadium instead of Cr-Mo.
If you have just bought a cordless impact wrench and need sockets that will not shatter on it, this is the cheapest sensible way in. It is genuinely impact-rated, 6-point, and it covers shallow and deep in both SAE and metric, so one case handles a modern metric ute and an older imperial-fastened trailer or bike. At A$66.47 dispatched from Australia, nothing else here gets you that much impact-duty coverage. The trade-off is the steel. CASOMAN builds these from chrome-vanadium (50BV30) rather than the chrome-molybdenum that GearWrench, DeWalt and the trade brands use for impact duty. Cr-Mo is tougher and less prone to brittle fracture under hammer loading, and on a page whose whole premise is that the wrong socket throws shrapnel, that difference deserves naming rather than glossing. Treat these as a working set for a weekend mechanic or a spare set for the ute, not as the sockets you belt on a high-torque gun all day. There is no Australian service network either, so warranty runs back through the Amazon seller.

Coverage 9.6 (rubric 9.5): Shallow and deep in SAE and metric, 5/16 to 3/4 inch and 8 to 22 mm, scores 9; the 22 mm socket adds half a point; single 3/8 drive, no ratchet.
Steel 7.8 (rubric 7): Impact-rated 6-point chrome vanadium (50BV30) with no named anti-rounding profile; warranty runs through the Amazon seller.
Case 7.0 (rubric 6): Blow-mould case; fit of the pieces is not described on the card.
Pros
+ Genuinely impact-rated 6-point sockets in shallow and deep, SAE and metric together
+ Metric runs 8mm to 22mm and SAE 5/16" to 3/4", so one case covers modern and older vehicles
+ Includes 3" and 6" impact extension bars, a 3/8" universal joint and a 1/2"-to-3/8" reducer
+ Ships from Australia at A$66.47, the cheapest impact-duty coverage in this ranking
Cons
− Chrome-vanadium 50BV30 steel, not the chrome-molybdenum trade brands use for impact duty
− No Australian service network - CASOMAN's limited lifetime warranty runs back through the Amazon seller rather than a local service agent
− Metric jumps from 19mm straight to 21mm, so there is no 20mm socket in either shallow or deep

SAE and metric 3/8" hand sockets in standard and deep lengths with Milwaukee's 90-tooth ratchet, for a garage that sees both imperial and metric fasteners. Chrome hand sockets, so keep them off the impact wrench.
Read this first: these are chrome hand sockets, not impact sockets, so pair your impact wrench with the GearWrench or DeWalt sets instead. As a ratchet set it covers more ground than any other hand set here, with SAE and metric sockets in both standard and deep lengths on one 3/8" drive, and the 90-tooth ratchet needs only a short arc to catch in a cramped engine bay. The sockets have four flat anti-roll sides, so they stay put on a guard or a bench and take a spanner on the flats, and the sizes are marked clearly. The case is a hinged blow-mould box with a removable inner tray that drops into a tool chest drawer, not a PACKOUT organiser. The caveat is where it comes from. On Amazon AU this listing is sold and shipped by Amazon US with free international delivery, so it is a US import: returns go through Amazon US, and the lifetime guarantee is Milwaukee's US warranty rather than one you can count on claiming at an Australian Milwaukee dealer. It also costs more than the other hand sets on the list.

Coverage 9.6 (rubric 9.5): Standard and deep sockets in both SAE and metric score 9; the 90-tooth ratchet in the box adds half a point.
Steel 5.9 (rubric 4.5): Chrome hand sockets with no alloy, impact rating or drive profile published; no warranty credit because this is a US import.
Case 7.8 (rubric 7): Blow-mould case with a fitted location for every piece and a removable tray scores 6.5; four flat anti-roll sides add half a point.
Pros
+ SAE and metric sockets in both standard and deep lengths on one 3/8" drive
+ 90-tooth ratchet that catches in a short arc in tight spaces
+ Four flat anti-roll sides with clearly marked sizes
+ Removable inner tray that drops into a tool chest drawer, with about 300 ratings at 4.8 stars
Cons
− Not impact rated. Chrome hand sockets must never go on an impact wrench
− US import sold by Amazon US, so returns and warranty claims do not start with an Australian dealer
− Blow-mould case rather than a PACKOUT organiser, and the dearest hand set here
A small but properly made hand socket set from a trade brand, with an 84-tooth ratchet and off-corner sockets that grip tired bolts instead of rounding them - the budget pick for someone who wants quality over piece count.
Most sets at this price win on piece count. The Crescent X10 goes the other way: 20 pieces, all of them things a mechanic would actually use. You get nine SAE sockets from 5/16" to 13/16", nine metric from 9mm to 19mm, a 3/8" extension and the part that sells it, an 84-tooth sealed-head ratchet that needs only 4.3 degrees of swing and has a slim teardrop head for tight engine bays. The 6-point sockets use off-corner loading, so they bear on the flats of a nut rather than the corners and are far less likely to round off a rusted bolt. Coloured rings tell SAE from metric at a glance. Know the limits before you buy. These are hand sockets, not impact-rated, so keep them off a rattle gun. There are no deep sockets, the metric run skips 16mm and 18mm, and nothing is larger than 19mm, so wheel nuts need a 1/2" set. Storage is an open plastic rack the pieces clip onto, not a lidded case. It is sold and shipped by Amazon AU, with 4.8 stars across more than 1,500 reviews.

Coverage 8.5 (rubric 8): Standard-depth sockets in both SAE (5/16 to 13/16 inch) and metric (9 to 19 mm) score 7.5; the 84-tooth ratchet in the box adds half a point; single 3/8 drive, largest socket 19 mm, no deeps.
Steel 7.4 (rubric 6.5): Hand sockets (not impact rated) in Crescent's Crestoloy alloy from a trade brand with a named off-corner loading drive profile; the maker quotes ASME torque specs rather than ISO 1174 or DIN 3120, so one of the two applies.
Case 6.6 (rubric 5.5): Open plastic storage rack with each piece clipped to a location but no lid or enclosed case, so scored below a fitted blow-mould case.
Pros
+ 84-tooth sealed-head ratchet with a 4.3 degree swing arc and a slim teardrop head for cramped spaces
+ Off-corner loading 6-point sockets grip on the flats, so they are less likely to round a worn or rusted fastener
+ SAE 5/16" to 13/16" and metric 9mm to 19mm with colour-coded rings to tell the two apart
+ Sold and shipped by Amazon AU, with 4.5 stars across roughly 1,500 reviews
Cons
− Hand sockets only - not impact rated, so never use them on an impact wrench
− Standard depth only, the metric run skips 16mm and 18mm, and the largest socket is 19mm
− Pieces clip onto an open storage rack rather than a lidded case, so it is not ideal loose in a ute tray
− Only 20 pieces, far fewer than the bulk kits at the same price

Rank #6
Bahco SL25L 37-Piece 1/4" Drive Socket and Bit Set (Metric, Deep + Standard)
Our Verdict
The long version of the SL25 that went out of stock - the same Snap-on-owned Dynamic Drive profile and quick-release ratchet, but with deep sockets added alongside the standard ones.
Bahco let the 25-piece SL25 fall out of stock on Amazon AU in August 2026, and the SL25L is the same set with the gap filled in. Read what this actually is before you buy it. It is a 1/4" drive set built around small metric sockets from 4mm to 13mm, a short quick-release ratchet, a 100mm extension bar and a bit selection, in a case the size of a paperback. It is not a mechanics socket set and it must never go near an impact wrench - these are hand sockets on a drive far too small for a rattle gun. What it is instead is one of the best small-fastener kits going for the money, and the L version improves on the set it replaces in the way that matters most: it carries both standard and deep sockets across the same 4mm to 13mm range, so a long stud or a protruding bolt no longer stops you dead. Bahco is Snap-on owned, the Dynamic Drive profile bites the flats rather than the corners so it grips tired fasteners instead of rounding them, and the alloy steel is made to ISO 1174 and DIN 3120. Two catches carry over unchanged. It is metric only, with nothing imperial and nothing above 13mm, so wheel and suspension work still needs a 1/2" set. And it is an Amazon Global Store item shipped and sold by Amazon UK - allow one to three weeks, expect duty and GST at checkout, and understand that Australian Consumer Law remedies are much harder to exercise on an import than on locally sold stock. Bahco has AU distribution, but not for this SKU.

Steel 7.8 (rubric 7): Chrome hand sockets from a Snap-on-owned trade brand with the Dynamic Drive profile and ISO 1174 / DIN 3120 spec; no AU warranty for this SKU.
Case 7.0 (rubric 6): Paperback-sized case; the card does not describe fitted locations.
Pros
+ Standard and deep sockets across 4mm to 13mm, where the SL25 it replaces had standard only
+ Bahco Dynamic Drive profile grips worn fasteners on the flats instead of rounding the corners
+ Quick-release ratchet plus a 100mm extension bar for nuts set down inside machinery
+ Alloy steel built to ISO 1174 and DIN 3120, from a Snap-on owned brand
+ 4.7 stars across roughly 1,170 reviews
Cons
− Amazon Global Store import shipped and sold by Amazon UK - allow one to three weeks and expect import charges, with warranty and ACL remedies harder to exercise
− Not impact rated, and at 1/4" drive it cannot be used with an impact wrench at all
− Metric only, 4mm to 13mm - no imperial sizes and nothing large enough for wheel or suspension work
− About A$12 more than the SL25 it replaces

Amazon Basics 123-Piece Mechanic Tool Kit and Socket Set with Case
Our Verdict
123-piece kit of 1/4" and 3/8" chrome hand tools in a moulded case. A strong first toolkit or Father's Day gift, but the count is mostly bits and hex keys and none of it belongs on an impact wrench.
Useful kit, wrong shelf for anyone who arrived from the impact wrench page. These are polished chrome vanadium hand sockets and they must never be fitted to an impact wrench. It is also worth knowing what the 123 actually is: a large share of the count is screwdriver bits and hex keys, and the socket content named in any source is small, nine 3/8" deep sockets, four metric from 9mm to 13mm and five SAE from 5/16" to 9/16". Nobody is servicing a 4WD with this. What it is genuinely good at is being a first toolkit. For A$84.90 you get 1/4" and 3/8" drive, a pear-head quick-release reversible ratchet, a broad bit and hex key spread in both metric and SAE, and a moulded case, which covers flatpacks, bikes, home repairs and light car work. As a Father's Day gift for someone who owns a hammer and not much else, it is hard to beat. The catch is support. It is Amazon exclusive, with no Australian retailer and no local service agent, so an Amazon AU return is the only remedy if something snaps.

Coverage 6.3 (rubric 5): Sockets are a small share of the 123 pieces (nine 3/8 inch deep sockets named), so 4.5; 1/4 and 3/8 inch drives add half a point.
Steel 6.3 (rubric 5): Polished chrome vanadium hand sockets with no drive profile; not impact rated.
Case 7.0 (rubric 6): Moulded case; the card does not say whether every piece is located.
Pros
+ A$84.90 takes someone from no tools to a working kit, which no other entry in this category does
+ Both 1/4" and 3/8" drive with a pear-head quick-release reversible ratchet, so it handles small fasteners and general work
+ Hex keys in both metric and SAE plus a broad bit range, which is what most home and light garage jobs actually need
+ 12,931 ratings at 4.6 stars, a very large sample for a kit at this price
Cons
− Not impact rated. Polished chrome vanadium hand sockets that must never be fitted to an impact wrench
− The socket content is thin for a kit sold on a 123-piece headline, with much of the count made up of bits and hex keys
− Amazon exclusive with no Australian retailer and no local service agent, so an Amazon AU return is the only remedy
We score socket sets across four category-specific dimensions. Coverage & Range looks at the sizes actually included, metric and SAE, standard and deep, and whether the gaps fall in sizes Australian vehicles and machinery really use. Steel & Durability covers the alloy, whether the set is genuinely impact-rated, point count and drive profile, corrosion finish and the warranty standing behind it. Case & Organisation weighs how well the sockets stay put in a ute tray or under a bench, because a set that spills is a set you stop using. Value compares real coverage per dollar against the current Amazon AU price, not the piece count printed on the box. Scores come from triangulating manufacturer specification sheets, Australian retailer listings and the pattern in buyer reviews. We do not physically test tools. Where a manufacturer's own sources contradict each other, we describe the capability qualitatively rather than publish a number we cannot stand behind.

What to Look for in a Socket Set or Mechanics Tool Kit
Impact-Rated Sockets Are Not Optional on a Rattle Gun
If the sockets will ever go near a cordless impact wrench, they must be impact-rated. Chrome vanadium hand sockets are hardened for wear and cut thin for access, which makes them brittle under the hammer action of an impact gun. They can crack and throw fragments. True impact sockets use chrome molybdenum, thicker walls and a black corrosion-resistant finish, so they deform rather than shatter. Only two picks here are genuine Cr-Mo: the GearWrench 84916N and the DeWalt DWMT74739, whose CR-440 is a chrome molybdenum alloy. The CASOMAN 49-piece is sold as an impact set but CASOMAN specifies chrome vanadium, so it ranks lower. The Milwaukee PACKOUT, Bahco SL25L, Amazon Basics and Crescent X10 sets are chrome hand sockets - keep them off the gun.
Drive Size, and Why 3/8" Is the Default
Drive size is the square that connects the socket to the ratchet or gun. 1/4" suits interior trim, sensors, hose clamps and small fasteners where a bigger handle will not fit and would over-torque anyway, which is the Bahco SL25L's territory. 3/8" is the workhorse for automotive and general mechanical work and where most of this list sits. 1/2" is for wheel nuts, suspension, driveline hardware and anything you will lean on a breaker bar for, which is why the DeWalt 1/2" set pairs naturally with an impact wrench. Check point count too: 6-point sockets grip the flats and are far less likely to round a tired fastener than 12-point.
Piece Count Is a Marketing Number
A 148-piece kit is not three times the tool of a 44-piece socket set. Big piece counts on value kits are padded out with hex keys, screwdriver bits, cable ties and a tape measure, and the socket coverage underneath can be thinner than a dedicated set half the size. What matters is the size roster: whether you get metric and SAE if you run older or imported gear, whether deep sockets sit alongside standard ones (deep is what reaches down a wheel stud or a long-thread exhaust nut), and whether the metric range carries past 19mm. Read the published size list on the manufacturer's page, not the number on the front of the box.
The Amazon AU Brand Gap, Stated Plainly
Ask an Australian mechanic to name a socket brand and you will hear Kincrome, Sidchrome, SP Tools or ToolPRO. On Amazon AU those listings are thin: frequently no featured offer, very low stock, or third-party sellers well above shop price. It is the same pattern we flag with Ryobi being effectively Bunnings-exclusive here. What Amazon AU stocks properly is DeWalt, GearWrench, Milwaukee, Bahco and the high-volume value brands, which is why this ranking looks the way it does. If your heart is set on Kincrome or Sidchrome, Repco, Supercheap Auto, Total Tools or the trade counter is the better channel. Always check who ships and sells a listing, because Global Store items land from overseas.
Warranty, Import Delivery and Father's Day Timing
Lifetime warranty is standard marketing on socket sets and worth little if nobody local honours it. GearWrench is supported in Australia by Apex Tool Group and the 84916N is a catalogued Australian SKU stocked by Total Tools and other trade retailers, so a claim has somewhere to go. That is the exception across these seven rather than the rule. The Bahco SL25L ships through Amazon Global Store rather than local stock, so allow one to three weeks and expect a warranty claim to run back through the seller. If you are buying for Father's Day on Sunday 6 September 2026, order any Global Store item well before the end of August and stick to locally dispatched stock if you are cutting it fine.
A socket set is the least glamorous thing in the toolbox and the part you touch on every single job. The wrench, the ratchet and the breaker bar are just handles. The socket is what actually grips the fastener, and it decides whether a seized 19mm suspension bolt comes off clean or comes off rounded. Get the coverage right and a wheel change, a brake job, a bash-plate swap or a driveline bolt on a 79 Series is a ten-minute job with no swearing. Get it wrong and you are at the servo on a Saturday afternoon paying single-socket prices for the one size you did not own. For Australian mechanics, 4WD owners and tradies, a good socket set is the quiet purchase that makes every other tool in the kit work properly.
Before anything else, work out whether these sockets will live on a hand ratchet or on a rattle gun, because the two are not interchangeable. Chrome vanadium hand sockets are hardened for wear and cut thin for access, which makes them brittle. Put one on a cordless impact wrench and the hammering action can shatter it and throw shrapnel. Impact-rated sockets, the black ones, use a tougher chrome molybdenum alloy with thicker walls, so they flex instead of fracturing. If you own an impact wrench, or you are shopping our cordless impact wrench rankings, impact-rated is not a preference, it is the only safe option. The second decision is drive size: 1/4" for trim, sensors and small fasteners, 3/8" for the bulk of automotive work, and 1/2" for wheel nuts, suspension and anything you will put a bar on.
This ranking covers the seven socket sets and mechanics kits Australian buyers should actually consider on Amazon AU in 2026, from a locally catalogued GearWrench impact set at A$199.95 down to a 148-piece automotive and household kit at A$45.99 that makes a genuinely good Father's Day present for Sunday 6 September. Two honest limits. First, the brands Australians know from the trade counter, Kincrome, Sidchrome, SP Tools and ToolPRO, are thin on Amazon AU, so the strong range there is DeWalt, GearWrench, Milwaukee, Bahco and the high-volume value brands. We explain why that matters below. Second, the Bahco SL25L at rank 6 ships through Amazon Global Store rather than local AU stock, so allow one to three weeks for delivery and expect any warranty claim to run through the seller rather than a local service agent. Order it early if it is a gift. Prices move daily and stock moves faster, so always confirm on the live Amazon AU listing before you buy.

Yes, and it is a safety issue rather than a performance nicety. Chrome vanadium hand sockets are hardened for wear and made thin-walled for access, which makes them brittle under the hammering action of an impact wrench. They can crack and throw fragments. Impact-rated sockets use a tougher chrome molybdenum alloy with thicker walls and a black corrosion-resistant finish, so they deform rather than shatter. Never run a rattle gun on chrome hand sockets, and do not judge by how sturdy a socket looks. On this list only the GearWrench 84916N and the DeWalt DWMT74739 are chrome molybdenum. The CASOMAN 49-piece is marketed as an impact set but CASOMAN specifies chrome vanadium. The Milwaukee PACKOUT, Bahco SL25L, Amazon Basics and Crescent X10 sets are hand-ratchet sets.
What is the difference between chrome vanadium and chrome molybdenum sockets?+
Chrome vanadium (Cr-V) is the standard steel for hand sockets. It is hardened for wear and takes the bright chrome plating you see on a shiny socket tray, but that hardness makes it brittle under shock loading. Chrome molybdenum (Cr-Mo) is more ductile, so it absorbs the repeated hammer blows of an impact wrench by flexing instead of fracturing. That is why impact sockets are Cr-Mo, thicker in the wall and finished in black rather than chrome. If a listing advertises an impact set but specifies Cr-V steel, treat that as a prompt to read the rest of the listing carefully before you put it on a gun.
Should I get a 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2" drive socket set?+
It depends on what you are undoing. 1/4" drive suits small fasteners, interior trim, sensors, hose clamps and electrical work where a larger ratchet will not fit. 3/8" is the all-rounder and where most automotive and general mechanical work lives, which is why most of our picks sit there. 1/2" is for wheel nuts, suspension bolts, driveline hardware and anything you will lean on a breaker bar for, and it is the drive to match with a 1/2" impact wrench. If you can only buy one set, 3/8" covers the most ground. Most working mechanics end up owning all three over time.
Why can't I find Kincrome or Sidchrome socket sets on Amazon Australia?+
It is a channel gap, not a quality judgement. Kincrome, Sidchrome, SP Tools and ToolPRO sell mainly through trade counters and their own retail partners, so their Amazon AU listings tend to be thin: frequently no featured offer, very low stock, or third-party sellers at prices well above the shop. It is the same pattern as Ryobi being effectively Bunnings-exclusive here. What Amazon AU does stock properly is DeWalt, GearWrench, Milwaukee, Bahco and the high-volume value brands, which is what this ranking reflects. If you want Kincrome or Sidchrome specifically, buy from Repco, Supercheap Auto, Total Tools or your trade supplier instead.
Are 100-plus piece mechanic tool kits actually worth it?+
Sometimes, but not for the reason the box suggests. Many 100-plus piece kits are household kits padded with pliers, a hammer and a tape measure, so their socket coverage is thinner than a dedicated 44-piece set. The Amazon Basics 123-piece is different: a mechanic's socket set in 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drives, but polished chrome vanadium and hand-ratchet only. They earn their place as a first kit, a car boot kit or a spare set for the shed, where breadth beats depth and the price is under A$100 rather than A$200. If you already own screwdrivers and pliers, spend the same money on a proper socket set with a fuller size roster in both metric and SAE, because older machinery, imported gear and some US-built 4WDs still run imperial fasteners.
What is a good socket set to buy as a Father's Day gift in Australia?+
Buy for what he already owns. If he has a cordless impact wrench, an impact-rated set like the DeWalt DWMT74739 1/2" at A$134.84 gets used the same weekend. If he is already on Milwaukee PACKOUT, the 48-22-9482 slots straight into the stack in his ute, though it is metric only. If it is a first proper kit for a home garage or a car boot, the Amazon Basics 123-piece or the smaller but better-made Crescent X10 20-piece do the job without overspending. Father's Day falls on Sunday 6 September 2026, so order early, and avoid Global Store imports like the Bahco SL25L close to the date because those run one to three weeks.
